Parish church of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Tovo
The church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Tovo was founded in the mid-16th century; this period saw the creation of the altarpiece by Raffaello and Giulio De Rossi, dated 1560. During the 16th century, the building was enlarged and enriched with new altars and structural interventions.
At the beginning of the 17th century, the church was described as rich and decorated; among the works is the altarpiece of the Madonna della Maestà (1617), while a contemporary crucifix has been lost. Originally, it featured two naves and a choir made of particularly fine walnut wood.
In 1709, the building underwent significant renovation that modified its layout and the main façade. In the following centuries, the main altar in marble, made in 1758 by Agostino De Ferrari, and the restoration of the bell tower after the lightning strike in 1885 were notable.
Today, the interior appears harmonious and well-kept, with five altars dedicated to various devotions. Among the most significant works are the crucifix and the wooden statue of the Madonna with the Child, attributed to Anton Maria Maragliano, examples of great quality in Ligurian sculpture.
